Leadership in UX

I’ve been working in the UX industry in one form or another for over 15 years. I’ve been an individual contributor on countless projects and have enjoyed all stages of the design process. I’m not one to shy away from getting my hands dirty, jumping on a user interview, or putting together a prototype for an upcoming test. However, being an effective leader in this field requires more than a mastery of the UX craft.

Throughout my career, I’ve always emphasized human connections and the art of influence. Your ability to design and impact digital products only extends as far as your ability to influence those around you. In leadership, this is even more true. Building genuine relationships, making good on the commitments you make, and showing an honest investment in your team is just as important as understanding design systems.

I believe in bottom-up leadership. My role is to support my team and build them up. The greater their achievements, the greater my achievements. I believe in coaching and mentoring team members to their highest potential, challenging them, and motivating them to always push for better. I’m more than happy to give them the spotlight and celebrate their achievements. I am a down-to-earth leader, with open and honest communication, regular check-ins, and candid conversations about career goals.

Ultimately, leadership allows me to impact digital products more than I ever could on my own.
